JASON walked around the exterior of the house. The clouds warned that it might rain at any moment, but he was not concerned with that.
Most of the very bad weather was due far south of their region. Besides, he had spent many an afternoon on the streets of Paris and Vienna walking in the rain. It was always a relaxing activity for him.

Suburbilicious: Vignettes from Jasper Lane
Cassie’s morning gossip with Becky, Vera, and Melinda had been canceled because Cassie had some other matter to attend to. Becky and Vera knew what that other matter entailed. Melinda was the only one left out of the loop; Cassie had to come up with some lie to tell her.
Jason didn’t know what Cassie had told Melinda, but as he wandered about the freshly dug ground amidst the roses and bushes, he soon found out.
“Hi there, Jason.” Melinda stood over him as he examined the dirt.
His thoughts had been elsewhere, and he hadn’t noticed her coming toward the cul-de-sac. A long white bone mischievously sticking up out of the earth had caught his attention; Jackson Bloom pointing fingers.
Jason snatched it up quickly, sliding it into his back pocket, and then stood to greet Melinda.
“Good morning, Mrs. Gold. Didn’t my mother tell you she had to do something else this morning so she wouldn’t be able to have coffee?”
He had collected himself flawlessly from the start Melinda had caused.
There wasn’t one stutter or suspicious pause.
“Yes, she did. And you know me. I couldn’t help but stop by and see for myself.”
“See what?”
“The new landscaping, of course. I adore a beautifully landscaped home.” She looked at the dirt and frowned. “It doesn’t seem they’ve done a very good job. Is she certain she’s hired good people? I know a lovely group of Mexicans I can refer her to.”
“They had to leave.” Jason was making up stories. “Yeah, they just got started early this morning.”
“I thought they started last night?”
“They did. I mean, they brought their equipment over last night, and I think did a little digging.” He watched Melinda to make sure his story was jiving with what she had been told by Cassie. “But they were set to really begin this morning.”
“But they had to leave?”
